From Front Desk to Frontlines: Angelique Thompson’s 20-Year HVAC Evolution

Angelique Thompson’s journey into the HVAC industry began in 2004 when she joined ERASE as a receptionist and admin assistant. While her initial interest lay in graphic marketing—designing company digital portfolios and websites—she quickly discovered the diversity of the HVAC field, sparking a passion to learn more. Over the years, Angelique has grown within the industry, driven by curiosity and a desire to broaden her expertise.

Currently, Angelique serves as the Operations Manager at ERASE, where she is responsible for streamlining systems, overseeing the company’s daily operations, and leading the Service Department. Her role extends beyond these primary duties as she actively contributes to the E.R.A.S.E Health & Safety Committee, promoting a strong and compliant safety culture within the organization. Angelique also manages staff training and MERSETA-related matters (SDF), recognizing the importance of ongoing education and skills development in ensuring both high-quality workmanship and personal growth for each employee.

Throughout her career, Angelique has benefited from extensive training opportunities provided by ERASE. She has participated in numerous internal HVAC training programs and external courses offered by industry suppliers. Additionally, Angelique is currently pursuing part-time studies in Occupational Health and Safety through the University of Cape Town (UCT), further enhancing her qualifications and commitment to safety in the workplace.

As a woman in the HVAC industry, Angelique acknowledges the challenges but also the opportunities. She has always felt that the industry values the unique contributions women bring to the table. Working alongside many successful women in sales and management, Angelique notes the dedication, strong work ethic, and resilience required to thrive, particularly during the demanding summer season when the workload and client demands are at their peak.

Angelique is excited by the current trends and innovations in HVAC, particularly the growing emphasis on indoor air quality amidst global temperature increases. She is particularly interested in sustainable trends such as the engineering of ventilation systems, immersion cooling, new generation refrigerants, and advancements in inverter systems.

Reflecting on her work environment at ERASE, Angelique expresses immense gratitude for being part of a formidable team led by CEO and Chief Engineer Grant Gilbert (Pr Tech Eng). Under his guidance, the team is encouraged to pursue continuous career development through training and performance-based initiatives, fostering a culture of excellence and motivation.

Among her many achievements, Angelique is particularly proud of her involvement in HVAC refurbishment projects for oil rigs and ships across Africa. These projects required strategic planning and problem-solving to ensure smooth operations and timely completion, showcasing her ability to handle complex and high-stakes challenges.

Angelique is a strong advocate for diversity and inclusion in the HVAC industry. She supports local community upliftment and is committed to fostering a progressive and positive working culture where all employees can thrive. ERASE’s annual intake of BEE apprentices, who receive comprehensive training both in the field and through internal and external courses, is a testament to this commitment.

Looking ahead, Angelique is eager to participate in and develop workshops and training programs specifically designed for women in HVAC. She believes that such initiatives would significantly strengthen the industry’s foundation and elevate the quality of work across the board.

Balancing work and personal life in a demanding field like HVAC is a challenge, but Angelique finds ways to recharge during the quieter winter season. However, she admits that she thrives on pushing her limits at work and takes immense pride in ERASE and all that the company accomplishes.
